Phatman’s Caramelized Onion Gravy

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 2 Large Onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp Sugar (brown or white, depending on preference)
  • 3 tbsp Gravy Powder (Beef)
  • 400ml Water
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste

Method:

  1. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat until it begins to sizzle.
  2. Add the sliced onions and sautรฉ them, stirring occasionally, until they start to softenโ€”about 5 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle the sugar over the onions and reduce the heat to low. Continue cooking for another 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown. The sugar helps them develop that rich, sweet flavor.
  4. Once the onions are caramelized, stir in the gravy powder and let it cook for a minute, allowing the flavor to infuse with the onions.
  5. Gradually add the water, whisking continuously to create a smooth, flavorful gravy. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes, thickening to your desired consistency.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and give it a final stir before serving.
